What students are saying

“On behalf of all of my classmates, I want to thank you for providing us with such a comprehensive, easy-to-read, engaging text book to use for our class. In fact, my professor thought it was so interesting and well-done, she read the book from cover to cover. Your work has been a great service to us all. My sociology book is the only textbook that I currently own that I actually enjoy reading. Thank you!”

“I’m a college student in California and my Sociology class used your book; Sociology. It was by far the best text book I have ever used. I actually liked to read it for pleasure as well as to study. I just wanted to say it was great.”

“Thanks for writing such a brilliant book. It has sparked my sociological imagination. This was the first textbook that I have ever read completely and enjoyed. From the moment that I picked the book up I started reading nonstop.”

“I have read four chapters ahead; it’s like a good novel I can’t put down! I just wanted to say thank you.”

“Your book is extremely well written and very interesting. I find myself reading it for pleasure, something I have never done with college texts. It is going to be the only collegiate textbook that I ever keep simply to read on my own. I am also thinking of picking up sociology as my minor due to the fact that I have enjoyed the class as well as the text so much. Your writing has my highest praise and utmost appreciation.”

“I am taking a Sociology 101 class using Sociology, a book that I have told my professor is the best textbook that I have ever seen, bar none. I’ve told her as well that I will be more than happy to take more sociology classes as long as there is a Macionis text to go with them.” -D. O.

“I am an adult student recently returning to school and using your textbook. “Sociology.” I must say that the reading is most enjoyable. The information is current, relevant, and I dare say fun. It is my hope that texts used in future classes will be as well written as I have found yours to be.”

“I have been in college for three years and have not found a text book more remarkable or thought provoking as your Sociology book.”

“The students absolutely loved the Social Problems text. It is so readable, so clear, so colorful, so inviting. Their feedback made me glad I spent so much time choosing the best book for the course.”

“I am using your Social Problems textbook for my sociology course. I have never had a better book. It’s so easy to follow. The stories and extra highlights are very interesting and I love to read them. It’s a great book!”

I’ve just visited the ‘Society: The Basics’ website – specifically the powerpoint slides and I wanted to let you know who impressed I was with the presentation (I believe the words ‘Oh how cool!’ were said more than
once). These slides are wonderfully academic and entertaining. In the future I plan on using your material.

“I am taking an introductory sociology course which is using your book Sociology. Being the diligent student that I am, I actually read the preface. I saw the quotes you have from students commenting about how much they love the book. At first I was skeptical. Reading textbooks is not high on my pleasure list. I am happy to report to you that I was wrong. The book is so interesting [and] well written and uses terms that we students can understand. At the same time, you don’t talk down to us. The real-world examples of sociology in action make the text seem more practical and down to earth. I just wanted to let you know that you did write a very good textbook. I now know why it is the leading text in the field and why so many students love it.”

“Dude, your book rocks!!”

Thank you for writing a “global” view textbook for Sociology. I am a Malaysian Chinese, presently pursuing a M.A. in Sociology and a graduate assistant at the University of South Alabama, Mobile, Alabama. Recently I have some opportunities to teach some sessions of the Introduction class at the University and found that your textbook is very interesting and global minded. You have touched on moral, political, economical, and cultural aspects of different countries with a unique outlook.

I am a student in the National University of Ireland, Galway. I’m in first year and I took up a course on Sociology and so far, it’s going great for me. Your European edition, “Sociology – A Global Introduction”, is very easy to read and very understandable, and has been very helpful so far. There are Americans living in my building in Galway and one day one of them came into my room, saw the book on my desk and said “Cool! John Macionis! He’s a professor in my college!”. I thought that was kinda cool.
